How to read the Altcoin Season Index
The index shows what share of the top 50 altcoins by open interest have outperformed Bitcoin over the past 90 days. Stablecoins (USDT/USDC), wrapped tokens (WBTC/WETH), and gold tokens (PAXG/XAUT) are excluded, as they track other assets and do not reflect the independent performance of altcoins. The index is calculated using real Binance spot market prices in USDT pairs, without third-party APIs.
The scale ranges from 0 to 100. Above 75 is a full-blown altcoin season: capital flows from Bitcoin to altcoins, meme coins and first-tier tokens grow by tens and hundreds of percent. Below 25 is Bitcoin season: altcoins fall, BTC dominance grows, and the market moves to a safe haven asset. Between 25 and 75 lies a transition zone: neither side dominates, and the choice of strategy depends on the specific coin, not the overall trend.
Historically, pronounced altcoin seasons occur once or twice per cycle and last from two to four months. This occurred in January–April 2021 and February–March 2024. The rest of the time, the market spends in a BTC bias or neutral phase. Therefore, most attempts to catch an altcoin season in the middle of a bull market fail: it's cheaper to wait for clear confirmation when the index stays above 75 for several weeks in a row than to guess at the early stage.
Setups for the Altcoin Season
Altcoin season
Capital is flowing from Bitcoin to altcoins. Large Tier 1 networks (SOL, AVAX, SUI) and meme coins are performing best. This is a time for active altcoin trading with leverage. However, if the index stays above 90 for several weeks, it often marks a local peak—prepare for a correction.
Bitcoin season
Altcoins are falling, while BTC dominance is growing. In this phase, long-term altcoin holding is inferior to simply holding Bitcoin. A reasonable strategy is to move to cash or hold only BTC. Altcoin longs here almost always go against the trend.
Neutral phase
The market lacks a clear bias between Bitcoin and altcoins. Selecting individual coins rather than a general strategy is key here. This is a good time for swing trades on coins with a strong narrative or breaking news.
BTC bias
Bitcoin is outperforming most altcoins, but not by a catastrophic margin. This is a classic accumulation phase before the altcoin season: BTC rises, while altcoins follow suit with a lag. Positions in major altcoins can be gradually built up.
