A number from 0 to 100 indicating how many of the top 50 altcoins have outperformed Bitcoin over the past 90 days. A value above 75 indicates an alt season. Below 25 indicates a Bitcoin season.

What is the altcoin season index and how to read it?
Altcoin Season Index Created by CoinMarketCap, it measures how many of the top 50 altcoins (by market cap, excluding stablecoins) have outperformed Bitcoin over the past 90 days. If 38 of the 50 altcoins—that's 75% or more—outperformed BTC, the index declares an "alt season." If the opposite is true, it's a "Bitcoin season."
In January 2021, the index reached 97—almost all top altcoins grew faster than Bitcoin. ETH rose from $730 to $1,400 in a month, and BNB from $40 to $350. It's during periods like these that the most striking success stories emerge, as well as the most destructive FOMO-fueled buying at peaks. When BNB rose 800% in a quarter, most people bought near the peak.
The index doesn't predict the next cycle, but it does a good job of describing the current market conditions. A value of 80+ and rising Bitcoin dominance simultaneously signals a danger: a sharp reversal could occur. A value of 30 and falling dominance signals a return to profitability in the search for alts with strong fundamentals.
Decoding the index zones
Bitcoin Season (0–24)
Bitcoin dominates. Alts are either stagnant or falling against BTC. Total capital is flowing into Bitcoin. Strategy: hold BTC, shorten alts.
Neutral (25–74)
Mixed market. Individual sectors (DeFi, L2, GameFi) may perform well, but there's no consistent trend across all altcoins. Suitable for selective selection.
Altcoin Season (75–100)
Alt season. Most of the top 50 coins are outperforming BTC. Capital is being diverted into riskier assets. High risk: this is the phase when local alt peaks form.
