Abnormal Futures Volume: How to Get Ahead of Price Movement
An unusual surge in futures trading volume is one of the earliest signs of increased activity by major participants. Market makers, hedge funds, and large traders cannot completely hide their presence: the execution of large orders inevitably leaves a trace in volume statistics.
The "Abnormal Volume" preset shows coins where the daily futures trading volume significantly exceeds the average for the previous period. This spike doesn't indicate direction in itself, but it does signal, "Something's going on here, pay attention." Further analysis is possible through funding. OI and the price chart allows us to determine the probable direction.
A particularly valuable combination: abnormal volume + sideways price movement + growth OIThis is a classic example of position building before an impulse. At these moments, a major participant buys out the entire supply or puts pressure on the price, preventing it from moving until the position is fully built.
Combinations of volume with other signals
High volume + growth OI + price sideways
The strongest combination. Gaining position before a directional move. Watch the funding to determine direction.
High volume + growth OI + price increase
Impulse with new money. A strong bullish signal—the trend is confirmed. A trend-following position can be considered.
High volume + drop OI + price movement
Massive closing of positions. The movement may be final—a "climax volume" before a reversal.
High volume + no growth OI + sharp price increase
False breakout. There's volume, but no new positions—the move is unlikely to hold. High risk of a pullback.
